Well I missed my first day yesterday. I saw it coming…but that’s okay. The purpose of this blog is to stretch myself, not to tie myself down to deadlines and cause anxiety. Hopefully though missing posts doesn’t become the norm.
I was reading an article from BusinessWeek, “Now The Kids Can Wear Designer Clothes.” I’m not going to lie, I appreciate my designer duds and have steadily increased the amount that find home in my closet, sometimes to my dismay. I do contend that most of my clothes are found at Nordstrom Rack, killer online sales, or Outlet Malls.
The article cites “Children’s wear accounted for 5 percent of Burberry’s £1.28 billion ($1.99 billion) in sales last year and may double to 10 percent ‘over time’ as the company adds to its eight standalone children’s stores.”

How insane is that? In the midst of an economic recession unlike any we’ve seen in recent history that’s Burberry’s stat! That must mean the top 1% who own 35.6% of our wealth must be really busy buying baby Gucci?
One of my favorite displays at Art Prize was Plan B, which is in essence a spoof on consumerism. The artists built a sustainable town that is fully functioning and is representative of what we would have to do if a major power grid failed.

I wonder what these artists would think if they read this article about consumerism at it’s worst. Don’t get me wrong, as I mentioned earlier, I’m a fashion freak myself and I appreciate well crafted pieces but I am still in awe of the fact that it seems like we haven’t learned our lesson about being a bit more fiscally conservative…
